These galaxies, affectionately known to astronomers as the Mice, are interacting. The encounter has pulled streams of gas from each of them. Some astronomers believe that elliptical galaxies form when two spirals collide and merge. Perhaps a billion years from now, an astronomer in a distant galaxy will observe a young elliptical in this location and wonder about its origin.
